Gil Knight - Realtor
I first visited Ely in 1965 as a 14-year-old Boy Scout on a canoe trip and knew immediately this was where I belonged! I worked for 2 summers as a canoe guide at the Charles L. Sommers High Adventure Base on Moose Lake in the late 60s. I moved here year-round in 1972 and attended Vermilion Community College earning a degree in Natural Resource Technology.
From 1973 to 1989, I was a wilderness ranger and recreation technician on the Superior National Forest. I then attended the University of Wisconsin-River Falls and completed a Bachelor's Degree in Speech and Journalism in 1992.
My other passion at the end-of-the-road, has been WELY Radio. In the mid 70s and early 80s, I worked there as a DJ and advertising salesperson. In 1995, Charles Kuralt retired from CBS and bought our little station. One of the proudest moments in my life was when I was asked to become his News Director!
Sadly, Charles wasn’t with us very long. In the late 90s thru 2001, I returned to the station as host of the Morning Show. To this day, I occasionally sit in on a program as a guest host.
My life experience has provided me the opportunity to serve, on a call when needed basis, as a Public Information Officer on National Incident Management Teams since 1997. I have worked on forest fires, floods, disease outbreaks, the space shuttle Columbia recovery and various hurricanes, including Katrina.
The real estate bug hit me in 1999. I decided that my love and knowledge of the area, my desire to see this country developed in a positive way, and my communication skills made for a good combination. I enjoy helping folks find their perfect piece of paradise.
Giving back to the community has always been very important to me. I currently serve on the Ely Chamber of Commerce Merchant's Board, the Dorothy Molter Museum Board and am the President of the Vermilion Community College Foundation.
